JSO publishes a running export of murder victims through its open data portal. Each row is one victim - since a single incident can have more than one victim, the victim count below runs higher than the number of distinct reported incidents.

How we obtained this data

Every victim on this page comes from JSO's own open data portal export of murder victims. You can view JSO Open Data — Murder victim CSV exportAccessed Oct 2, 2026. We did not alter the substance of what JSO reported - every count below is built directly from that export's Report Year, Cleared, Victim Age, Victim Race, and Victim Gender fields.

A few limitations:

  • The export has no death date or death location field, so victims are grouped here only by the "Report Year" JSO assigned - not necessarily the calendar year the death occurred.
  • The most recent year is a partial year - this page reflects whatever JSO had published as of when we last retrieved the export, so its count will understate the eventual total.
  • "Cleared" reflects JSO's own clearance marking at the time of export and can change afterward as cases are solved or reclassified - it is not re-verified against court outcomes here.
  • Race and gender are as JSO reported them in the export, not independently verified.

Victims & Clearance Rate by Year

The number of murder victims JSO reported each year (solid line, left axis), against the share of that year's victims marked cleared (dashed line, right axis). The two don't move together consistently: victims and clearance rate fell together from 2022 to 2023 and again from 2025 to 2026, but 2024 broke that pattern - victim count dropped sharply while the clearance rate rose to its highest point in the dataset. The most recent year is partial - see the limitations above.
